Interface design conversations are overwhelmingly visual. We debate colour palettes, typography, spacing, and motion — and then ship products whose soundscape was decided by whoever grabbed the default notification chime from a stock library. Yet sound reaches users in a way pixels never can. It arrives whether or not they are looking. It cuts through pockets, across rooms, into conversations. For designers who care about human attention, audio may be the most powerful and least considered material available.

The question is not whether your product should make sound. It is whether every sound it makes has earned the interruption — and whether silence, used deliberately, might serve users better.

Sound Is a Claim on Attention

A visual element waits politely to be noticed. A sound demands to be processed immediately; the auditory system evolved to treat unexpected noise as potentially urgent. That biological reality gives audio designers enormous power and, with it, an obligation.

Most products squander both. The average phone emits dozens of near-identical pings per day, each one triggering the same low-grade orienting response, each one pulling a sliver of cognition away from whatever the person was doing. Volume and character matter too. Calm products favour sounds that are short, warm, and low in the frequency ranges associated with alarm. A muted wooden tap communicates completion just as clearly as a bright digital chirp, without the spike in arousal.

Silence as a Feature, Not an Absence

The most interesting frontier is not better sounds but better quiet. Some products now treat silence as something they actively provide.

E-readers are the canonical example: page turns, highlights, and progress all happen without a whisper, and readers describe the experience as restful in a way tablets rarely achieve. Focus modes across operating systems have evolved from blunt mute switches into scheduled, context-aware silence — quiet during deep work, during dinner, during sleep — turning the absence of sound into a designed experience with boundaries and rules.

There is also a subtler practice: designing what happens after silence. When a person emerges from two hours of focus mode, dumping fourteen queued notification sounds on them at once undoes the entire benefit. Thoughtful systems summarise quietly instead, letting the user re-enter the noise on their own terms.

Haptics, Speech, and the Wider Soundscape

Audio decisions do not exist alone. A gentle vibration can replace a sound entirely in personal contexts, communicating privately what a chime would broadcast to the whole room. Voice interfaces raise the stakes further: a spoken interruption is the most demanding form of machine-initiated contact there is, and should be held to the strictest standard of necessity.

It helps to think of every product as contributing to a shared acoustic commons. Your notification does not sound in a vacuum; it lands in an environment already saturated by every other app's claims. Designers who internalise that context tend to make quieter choices — not out of timidity, but out of respect for a resource nobody owns and everybody needs.
